An investigation into the level of biological control of mites in higher chill areas with long, hot and dry summers
Executive Summary
In hot, dry inland areas with cold winters biological control has not always been successful. The objective of this project is to try to establish the reasons.
The study is being conducted in the Agter Kouebokkeveld and the Witzenberg Valley. The predatory mite, Neoseiuls californicus, is present in sufficient numbers to provide biological control. However, the presence of dust at the site in the Agter Kouebokkeveld inhibits its predatory action. It also appeared as if chemical control was not very successful. This could also be the result of the presence of dust.
